At the start of 2026, the maritime transport market recorded an average 10% increase in container handling charges (THC) announced by major shipping lines. This adjustment coincides with the implementation of new stevedoring service tariffs at Vietnam’s two key deep-sea port clusters: Cai Mep - Thi Vai and Lach Huyen. The surcharge hike aims to offset rising operational costs and align with Vietnam’s port infrastructure upgrade roadmap.

THC Surcharge Adjustments (Effective February 2026)

Shipping Line Container 20' (VND) Container 40' (VND) Container 45' (VND)
MSC ~3,52 million >5,4 million 6,36 million
Wan Hai Lines 3,75–5,4 million 5,7–8,4 million Depending on cargo

Lưu ý: Actual charges may vary depending on container type (dry/refrigerated) and each carrier’s pricing policy at the time of quotation.

Port stevedoring tariffs: Range from USD 63 – 119 per container for import/export cargo, depending on size and terminal type.

To mitigate the impact of rising surcharges, B2B enterprises should adopt flexible and proactive supply chain management strategies:
  • Budget planning: Incorporate surcharge fluctuations into 2026 logistics cost forecasts to protect profit margins.
  • Partner with professional logistics providers: Select logistics partners capable of negotiating comprehensive freight rates and advising on optimal routing to minimise the impact of individual surcharge increases.
  • Accelerate digital documentation: Leverage electronic customs declaration and accurate customs brokerage services to shorten cargo clearance times and avoid storage fees (DEM/DET) amid rising port operation pressures.
