INDIA OPENS MARKET TO VIETNAMESE FRESH DURIAN: NEW EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES FOR FRESH FRUIT SUPPLIERS
01/08/2026
The Government of India has officially added Vietnam to the list of countries authorized to export fresh durian to the Indian market.
According to VietNam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Government of India issued the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) (Fifth Amendment) Order, 2026, officially allowing the import of fresh durian (Durio zibethinus) from Viet Nam for consumption in India.
A notable aspect of the new regulation is that India does not require any additional phytosanitary declaration on the Phytosanitary Certificate and has not imposed any special import conditions for Vietnamese fresh durian. The streamlined requirements are expected to simplify export procedures and facilitate market entry for Vietnamese businesses.

A Promising Market for Vietnamese Fresh Fruit
With a population of more than 1.4 billion and a rapidly expanding middle-income consumer base, India is widely regarded as a market with significant growth potential for imported agricultural products and premium fresh fruit.
During the initial stage, Vietnamese durian is expected to be distributed primarily through premium retail chains, imported fruit stores, hotels, restaurants, and e-commerce platforms in major cities.
The market opening not only creates new opportunities for Vietnam's durian industry but also enables businesses to diversify their export markets and expand their international customer base.
Cold Chain Logistics Remains Critical
While the market opening creates new business opportunities, entering a new export market also requires greater attention to quality control throughout the supply chain.
For fresh durian, maintaining appropriate storage temperatures, minimizing temperature fluctuations, selecting suitable sailing schedules, and ensuring reliable transportation are all critical to preserving product quality until it reaches consumers.
To meet the expectations of this new market, businesses should establish an integrated logistics strategy covering packing, cold storage, transportation, and distribution from the very first shipment.
